erda Gardens NewsHi all,Well, the season has come to an end, and I am happy to say that will all of your help we made it through a tough transition year! We were able to transform three barren fields into glorious gardens, provide workshops to children (young and not so young), feed approximately 60 families, and pay our farmers, interns and land lords with a little to spare. We are talking to two more families in the south valley about expansion for next year so we are on track to move back up to our previous size in the next years. Thank you for all of your faith in supporting local efforts to provide a diverse and seasonal produce. We had some scares this year, (I don't know if you remember that in the spring we were in one of the worst droughts in centuries and were not sure if we were going to have water in the aqueducts) but hopefully we will have a long cold, wet winter which guarantees our water for next year. Applications for the 2007 season are available on our website and will be attached to this email. Please consider making your deposit for next years season now. Thank you to everyone who helped out with this year's harvest festival. We had somewhere around 300 people wander through (give or take 100 or so) and although we had a much smaller group working on the silent auction than in the past we still managed to fill 5 tables of merchandise and bring in $850 to support the garden. Thanks to Mary Broemel, Penina Ballen, Phil Jameson, Sarah Day, Lori and Molly Smith, who solicited donations from businesses and all of you who donated items to this event. Thank you to all those who donated baked goods and drinks. An especially strong thank you goes out to Kim Pophal who coordinated that effort. The bake sale and drink table sold $348 bringing our total revenue from this venture to almost $1200.00! I would have to say that the music this year was incredible! Thank you to our intern Chris Patchett for organizing the bands and all those who helped set up the stage and sound system. The bands: Holy Water and Whiskey, the Saltine Ramblers and the Uprising Voice donated their time and energy to come and play at this event, and for that, our heart felt thanks are given. Finally, a big thank you to the Altenbach family at Ironwood farms. They opened their property and their homes to us for the fall festival, but also were instrumental in the success of this event. Chris and Scott wowed the crowds with their locomotive steam engine, while Jenny gave tours of their straw bale house and helped children feed chickens, sheep and hold baby guinea hens. It was a great day! O.k. Now on to November happenings. We are having our last work day on Saturday November 11th from 9am to noon at the Blake street garden. (1305 Blake street at the corner of Blake and La Vega). Come help but the beds to sleep, clean up the green house, barn and shed for next year! If you still owe hours, this is a great opportunity to make them up! Remember that two people working for 3 hours makes up 6 hours of labor. Some of you have already sent in checks for work hours not made. Thank you for that, if you have questions about what or if you owe please contact Kim Pophal at 877-2137. We will be sending out a bill to those who did not make their commitment immediately after November. You can always save us a stamp by sending a check in now! The core group meeting is on Wednesday November the 14th at 6pm (we will meet for approximately 1 hour) at Jimmy's house, 1371 Jeannette SW. (Turn east off of Sunset just south of our distribution center) - there is a batting practice center on the corner. We are in serious need of a treasurer for next year. We will make the job easy for you to do. Please consider this opportunity to help your community. Call Phil Jameson for details 342-2730. 2007 Applications are now available. Half working shares will stay the same price: $295 for the season or just $11.35 per week Full working shares are $595 for the season or just $22.88 per week The work commitment continues to be the same for full and half share holders but this year we are asking for a work commitment deposit with payment of your share (this deposit will be refunded to you upon completion of your hours). We will be offering discounts for those who pay in full by April 1 st 2007. $10.87 per week for half working share ($282.50 for the season) and $21.92 per week for a full working share ($570 for the season) Payment for those who do not want to commmit to volunteer hours remains the same: $100 for either full or half share. Have a great winter! erda core group |
